EWG applauds House bill to protect safety of infant and toddler food

WASHINGTON – The Environmental Working Group applauds legislation introduced today by Reps. Emilia Sykes (D-Ohio), Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) and Tony Cardenas (D-Calif.) requiring the Food and Drug Administration to test  infant and toddler food for toxic metals and dangerous pathogens.

The bill would mandate quarterly tests of baby foods for toxic metals like lead and arsenic and require more sampling for Cronobacter in infant formula plants.

“Babies and toddlers should be safe from toxic metals and pathogens,” said Scott Faber, EWG senior vice president of government affairs. “EWG applaud Reps. Sykes, Pallone, Krishnamoorthi and Cardenas for leading efforts to keep our little ones safe.”

Baby food has been rocked by reports of high levels of toxic metals and Cronobacter contamination. While the FDA is being reorganized to better address food safety, it hasn’t set standards for toxic metals in baby food and has no plans to require routine tests for them.

“Without routine sampling, consumers will have little confidence in the safety of baby food,” Faber added.
